clearly he’s confused and thinks cassandra is one of otto skorzney’s panzer brigade 150 commandos
Fortunately for Cassandra, she has found respectable work elsewhere.

I hope this jerk gets in trouble for this when it is found out that she is a Coastlander. Maybe if her period of extraordinary rendition interferes with the dinner party this guy will get to deal with Julia and Snaktoria. Right now, that would be pretty sweet.
I doubt it, this is the type of government that is likely to just go. “Oh, you’re a coastland citizen? Carry on. Any pain we caused you is your own fault.”
“Matthew” here appears to be the worst kind of true believer…Something I’m not sure we know about the current political situation in the Core is whether or not these kinds of “enhanced interrogation techniques”, when employed on a rightful CEZ citizen, might result in any kind of a real diplomatic dispute.
I mean, they basically went from “She’s brown, let’s pick her up” straight to the punching.
well there was that one, or two, scenes where police where seen beating up ppl who where not part of the core zones. i think only one of em was not dark skinned.
as for sports questions… while there are a few of the female persuasion that so follow sports, the vast majority don’t. of course the opposite is true for men (most follow sports and only a few don’t).
also i agree with drak on their probable reaction if/when they find out she is a really a citizen.
Do you have any sources or studies that you could link me to back up that statement? I know my own anecdotes aren’t evidence, but it seems to me that your statement is based heavily in gender stereotypes that have little to no bearing on reality.
I got to “the female persuasion” and knew that this comment was going to be mired in sexist drivel. Thank you for living down to my expectations!
Redplague has a legit argument, regardless of how you feel about its framing: most people believe, however stereotypically, that fewer women than men follow sports. As a result, our interrogator friend should not find her lack of knowledge regarding sports at all out of the ordinary.
Except it’s been repeatedly seen that Chartannia and Kyokan have far, far less rigid gender roles than our own society. Especially the latter, which doesn’t seem to have much truck with gender roles at all.
dude kind of just wants to get his “punching brown people” on though so what are you on about “out of the ordinary”
Oh gosh hey did you think that maybe gender norms are radically different in heliothaumic or maybe that it’s one of the major themes? It would have never occurred to me since, y’know, I’m a girl which means I don’t use the internet for anything other than facebook.
Of course not, sisterscientist. Such a thought is obviously too important for your delicate lady-brains. Like sports.
i am amazed so many people are offended by this…
“oh no, he admitted women like sports less then men! that makes him a sexist pig! lynch him!”
seriously. what the hell people.
oh no did I speak out against a crude stereotype??? oh deary me I best be getting back to the kitchen.
oh ok i guess going “lol what” and “uh source?” are literally lynching now cool. someone please think of the poor oppressed men ;_;
Ah yes, pointing out problematic language and stereotypes = literally administering mob justice. Gotcha~
You guys make the BEST hive mind.
crude stereotype? what the hell is CRUDE about this?
and as far as stereotype… yes it is one, and its also true. That gender roles might be different in the fictional world of the comic is given and a great thing to say, but this aggression is misplaced.
PS. girls like sports less then boys, its a fact, live with it. Nothing wrong with it, personally I hate sports, ugh.
If you seriously can’t tell what’s wrong with everything you’ve had to say, then congratulations! You’re a misogynist jerk!
resorting to petty insults? how sad.
you know, I think this bears further discourse.
Misogynist is one who hates women. I have made two statements:
1. women like sports less then men
2. I hate sports
The only possible conclusion would be that I am a misandrist, not a misogynist. But that also is ridiculously far fetched. HATING women or HATING men is an extremely out of whack conclusion to come to from those above two statements. Because I have never passed any judgement on anyone for liking or disliking sports.
Of course, there is the school of thought that the mere suggestion that women and men MIGHT have different tastes makes one a mysogenistic jerk… this seems to be the case here.
Except that that is not what misogynism is about and you are just trying to pull off some stupidly pedantic argument here, do your really think anyone is going to buy that?
Okay. Gonna do this in bullet points because you basically just sort of vomited all over the page, Taltamir, and I gotta find away to keep all your crap straight.
- Just so you know, misogyny is defined as hatred (or contempt) of women or girls. That doesn’t necessarily mean “Grr grr women suck” or decrying women out right. Making assumptions about women based on their gender IS misogyny.
- Boys liking sports more than girls IS a stereotype. It is a broad, sweeping generalization. It’s something we’ve all heard our whole lives, but that doesn’t mean its true. There are thousands upon thousands of female athletes and sports fans, and you insult them by disregarding their passions. Most of all, it is YOUR OPINION and that does not make it fact.
- Yes, men and women have different tastes. Adults and children also have different tastes. In fact, each of us is an individual with their own unique interests. Breaking this down into gender is wrong. It was never even about gender in the first place, and THAT is the problem here. The fact that you and the original poster need to break it down into a comfortable and familiar gender binary is the biggest and—as far as I am concerned—only problem here. Gender is utterly irrelevant. The fact that you need to make it so is sad and archaic.
trolled!
Yeah, don’t do that either.
Oh yeah baby. Roll with them punches.
“Dance, my puppets, dance” is about as dignified a way to end an argument as “NO YOU”.
Yep, you are now good as fired as soon as the Coastland embassy finds out about this. Have fun waiting tables.
Doubt it. He punched her in the stomach, leaves no bruises. It’s word of random stranger versus an esteemed and dedicated employee of the national security apparatus, who risks every day his life out on the front lines of battling terrorism and espionage, for the good of his country.
He has a magical video camera following him like a puppy. Dash-cams are the number one bane of dirty cops, and of all people he should remember that the whole nation is under constant surveillance. With that kind of infrastructure the Coastland embassy staff isn’t likely to buy a “we lost the recording” story either.
Also, getting punched in the gut like that will leave a bruise if you don’t see it coming in time to tense your abs and expel any air in your lungs before it connects. Trust me on this one, I’ve seen it a couple of times from both ends.
I do not know about Chartannia, but where I come from police brutality is regularly recorded by police cameras and then the recordings are mysteriously unavailable when someone attempts to prosecute. Maybe the Coastland embassy has more pull there, but I would assume the customs guys know their shit and how to avoid being caught with their pants down.
Also all of this is kind of assuming that the Coastland embassy ever finds out about this, chances are Cassandra is just going to be deported to some funny third-world state after being convicted for not being in possession of documentation of her funny-third-world nationality.
Not sure where you’re from, but where I’m from when the footage goes ‘missing’, charges tend to get dropped to avoid oversight authorities and watchdogs looking into the situation a little harder. If this guy is THIS bad at his job, I doubt his superiors will take much of a risk for him, instead of playing CYA and throwing him under a train to avoid any fallout that might be coming their way. I’d imagine the Chartannian embassy has enough pull that an incompetent, low level officer would have no career protection should he assault one of their citizens without cause.
Plus, if Cassandra gets deported, Coastland will get a much, much more interesting phone call from some third-world state asking why a Coastlander just got randomly dumped in their country by Chartannia.
Man, I bet this kind of thing happens all the time, I am sure they have procedures to avoid having to throw their clerks under the bus all the time.
And by the time Cassandra would arrive whereever, she will have even less of a chance to prove her citizenship.
If I may offer criticism: there ought to be some more tension in the arm punching her…or something. I’m not an artist, but it looks almost as if Cassandra fell onto it.
Also the interrogator needs to improve his skillz, he should have started with some psychological pressure instead of straight out punching her. Odd for someone otherwise so perfectly collected and calm to start dishing out the punches at first opportunity. :V
Yeah, I wasn’t too happy with that panel, either. It’s one of those panels that seemed to lose a lot of energy between thumbnailing and final pencils/inks– always annoying when that happens.
Keep it up otherwise, I quite like your comics.
I guess you do not really do speed lines but I figure it would really help there where you do not have a lot of room to convey the whole “movement” thing.
this is pretty stupid of him.
He confirmed that he hasn’t looked her up in the database, for all he knows she is someone important…
It’s been said a lot that what he’s doing is dumb/implausible/gonna bite him in the ass, but remember guys, 1) We don’t really know much about Chartannian laws other than they are horrifying and 2) he’s dealing with a potential terrorist and terrorism makes even the sanest governments lose their shit.
as I said above ‘Carry on, any pain we caused you is your own fault.’ That being said, while I think what he is doing is completely horrible, Cass is not being too smart herself. She does not recognize that she is in a situation where she is completely powerless and she is taking it as a joke/going on the defensive. Kinda an infinite edged sword tho, anything she does at the moment will make her look more suspicious.
I agree. As a member of the Chartannian government, he knows the rules, no matter how twisted. It’s Cassandra who’s the outsider, going along under the (mistaken) assumption that the enlightened Coastland laws apply wherever she goes.
This could easily go very badly.
and for all he knows she is the wife, girlfriend, whatever of someone important…
And why exactly can’t Cassandra be an important person by her own merit and accomplishments? In fact, I’d say that she already is—she found the goddamn Cosmonaut! If that doesn’t make her an important person, I don’t know what will. Besides sleeping with a Powerful and Important Man, I mean.
Seriously, your attitude is disgusting.
because if she was important enough for him to be endangering himself then he should have been able to recognize her.
Finding the cosmonaut is important, but I meant “high up military” important, the type that will give pause to someone in a corrupt regime.
Don’t assume things about other people.
Dude, I barely remember what the vice president looks like. “If she were REALLY important he’d KNOW” is not a valid argument.
as an intelligence officer that deals with terrorists he should be able to recognize her if she was herself nobility, congresswoman, an ambassador, or an influential general.
And she would have probably said something if she herself was a congresswoman, ambassador, general, nobility, etc. She is obviously a civilian.
And FYI, lesbians exist, she could be the wife or girlfriend of a powerful woman.
Cassandra? A LESBIAN????????? Bwuhhhhhh???
in retrospect, there are probably so many “important enough to get him in trouble” people that even considering his occupation he shouldn’t recognize them all. so that was a flawed assumption on my part.
Damn, taltamir, this just isn’t your day, is it? Your foot been turning all trolly and crawlin into your mouth.
But hey, at least you’ve backed off on some of this.
For what it’s worth, let’s consider that maybe you meant something like “There are a lot of women who don’t like *following professional sports*, proportionally more than men, I do thinks.”
As for whether gender roles are way different on Erde, I think maybe Takako might not be fully typical of how some one specific sh!#head in Chartannia is seeing things today. And maybe the news that The Database is actually compromised and untrustworthy has made him all omg wtf can’t think anymore apeshit.
Anon5, I didn’t “back off” on anything, I didn’t say anything wrong, and I haven’t put my foot into my mouth.
and this: “For what it’s worth, let’s consider that maybe you meant something like “There are a lot of women who don’t like *following professional sports*, proportionally more than men, I do thinks.””
IS what I said.
Hi, I am still here, and I would still very much like to see a scientifically- and sociologically-sound source behind these statements. “Because I say so” doesn’t really hold water. “Because I see it a lot on tv and stuff” doesn’t either. I would like hard numbers.
I’m going to second blaze here. The plural of anecdote is not data and you have, so far, offered nothing but anecdotes and “everyone-knows” logic. I’d like sources too, please.
(although actually with a little further thought hard numbers applying to a culture in this world would be kind of pointless because the gender roles on erda are assuredly not the same as the gender roles on earth and young children may not actually experience the same societal push into their assumed gender roles and hobbies that young children here experience)
Yeah, that’s true, though I think the OP assumed that Erdan gender roles are equivalent to modern Western ones, so hard numbers would at least show his assumptions to be either based in fact or not.
You stupid shit.
Whoops, that was addressed at taltamir sorry.
wow, that’s quite incendiary compared to the usual discussion here.
Well, the usual discussion is also a fair bit less misogynistic.
Don’t do this.
If you’re going to insult people, please at least pair it with an actual argument and not just a drive-by one liner.
pretty ironic that two separate worlds would each independently devise the Most Boring Sport In The History Of Existence
Not any more of a coincidence than that two separate worlds would each independently evolve humans, I guess.
Or the Westminster system of government :V
Clearly you are taking all the worldbuilding shortcuts here.
Carbon-based life forms? I wonder where you cribbed that!
perhaps baseball is the dream-product of some lovecraftian superbeing, swimming just beneath the surface of reality, donning a yankees jersey for all eternity and a day
and that lovecraftian superbeing was george steinbrenner
um excuse me sir i believe you are forgetting about american football
American football is the bastard child of sprinting and rugby.
It takes more after its mother.
here’s my impression of american football
*runs around*
*runs around some more*
*has the ball, this is good i guess*
*is tackled by dozens of burly men for some reason*
good game you guys
running around and gettin all up on sweaty dudes owns tho?? look deep within ur feelings…you know it to be true
oh god…………. the rippling pecs…………… the broad shoulders………………. i cant turn away
At least with football I have some semblance of understanding that there is these guys, and then there is these other guys, and at some point the ball is probably going to end up at the other side of the field. With baseball there is just a lot of guys standing around the field, each with their own little function that somehow contributes to a determination of which team is better at standing around and confusing foreigners trying to watch movies referring to US culture.
You know that one movie where Jet Li goes all kung fu on a bunch of people being jerks during a football thing? Try doing that with baseball.
I still maintain American Football would be a lot more fun without ten tonnes of armour and padding.
I mean, it looks like a very vigorous and sweaty sport . Why complicate such passionate matters with so much equipment?
oh man vanadium you’re so boned when you get to ds9 season 7
I actually spent the better part of a shitty underdog-team-barely-loses-high-school-baseball-thing movie reading up on it on wikipedia, so I should at least be able to figure out who is on which team.
van you just described 90% of americas gross media production
But… without the tonnes of padding American Football is just Rugby.
Which is, in fact, hardcore awesome and fun to play and watch.
Yes, but it’d be more fun without ten tons of padding and armour.
yeah as it stands its simply figurative bloodsport. bring back imperators/tridents to the bread/circus paradigm
american football is a convenient frame to drape expensive commercials over
It’s also extremely specific soft-core porn. Unf, shoulder pads.
well to be fair some of the commercials are entertaining. that’s almost a good reason for it to exist.
i know, istn it great? between plays you get a tantalizing eyeful of Hott Babes and Lite Beer. conan what is best in life (hint: its mike’s hard lemonade)
i tend to think of sports in terms of shonen manga with lots of BURNING SPIRIT that allows the underdogs to win, always. is this based in reality y/n
If it isn’t, we should change reality to comply.
in my experience yes. most teams are also helmed by malicious outcasts w/devilish features and military-grade armament access
in my experience yes. most teams are also helmed by malicious outcasts w/devilish features and military-grade armament access
what im saying is Read Eyeshield 21 Every Day
if thats on onemanga i will
anyway baseball owns the red sox owns dwi
hi im the red sox. *hits a ball, does a thing?? nope lol
so do you think the red sox will manage to squeak by and get the wildcard or will the fact that like 90% of the team is on the DL doom them
your thoughts please
i think that baseball will continue to hemorrhage relevance and die slow, agonizing death otherwise befitting perhaps only print media and the concept of the nation-state
fuck you baseball owns
But we know that by the time the federation comes around only few people will even know what baseball is anymore!
personally im hoping the braves dont choke and actually win a pendant this time.
oh man how could i forget! football had a NIPPLE in it once!!!
A NIPPLE, YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
baseball, on the other hand. has a cumulative count of zero (0) nipple. Looks LIke Football Wins Again
*watches all the footballs forever in search of the other nipple*
I’m sorry, there is no other nipple. It’s gone.
The Sock Monster was having a lean year.
N-nooooooo ;_;
B-but my tiny american attention span requires the tantalizing promise of overly hyped nudity to function! Hrrk-zzzt-fffttttt *coughs sputters dies*
eh im here for the pulsating man candy anyways
There’s always the cheerleaders…
100 get? awww too early.
You may have missed the mark in your quest to have a certain post number, but look at the comic number! 250 get! Woohoo!
Back to gender studies… So I’ve actually looked up papers related to sports as I was kinda surprised that nobody linked in one before. I haven’t spent more than five minutes searching, there might be contradicting ones out there.
Here it is: Annemarie Farrell: Why Women Don’t Watch Women’s Sport: A Quantitative Analysis. (http://etd.ohiolink.edu/send-pdf.cgi/Farrell%20Annemarie%20O.pdf?osu1147982213) One part interesting us is a slice the literature review part, from page 37 in the pdf. Some key quotes:
“…women become an ever-increasing percentage of sport spectators
and fans.”, “that participants thought that men were more enthusiastic and attracted to sport than women. However … women and men identified themselves as sport fans in similar ratios, though men stated they were more likely to watch sports on television.”
“Two studies shown men to be more enthusiastic consumers of sport .” (from p. 15)
The study defines fan and spectator a bit differently, so we can make the following conclusions:
- The percentage of women watching sports or being fans are rising.
- The ratio of sports fans (NOT spectators) is the same between genders.
- If we take the above two and the quote from page 15, we can assume that while the percentage of spectators are rising, the majority of spectators are still men.
- People think that men are more enthusiastic about sports.
- Women and men follow sports for somewhat different reasons. (No quote for this, read from p 37.)
- Although it is a bit unfortunate that the author uses fan interchangeably before introducing the distinction in terminology, on page 13 she cites ratios between 37% and 47% for women interested in different leagues. So I guess at least regarding the major leagues in the USA the stereotype is somewhat true but it is by no means a vast majority for men.
There you go.
Gender studies seem pretty intent on proving men and women are totally the same. I’ve just read the excerpts here, I have no desire to actually spend time reading it, but tell me, how do they determine whether someone is a fan, is it self reported?
I can imagine a lot of women saying “Oh I love sports! I watch this and that” but in reality I’d be surprised if they’d actually in all cases watch the sports regularly.
To me it seems the “gender stereotype” (a pretty derogatory word for traditional roles) holds up pretty well.
I’m not a gender studies expert as I’m in a completely different field and just took some extra classes with a limited connection to gender studies, so I can’t judge if trying to prove that is that usual. People wanted sources, it is up to you to accept the results or reject them because you think the researchers were biased. However I guess you won’t find studies concerning this outside of this field.
Yes, this is self-reported based on things like identification with teams and time spent watching TV, going to events, etc. I haven’t read the whole paper and all the referenced text either either, but I guess they haven’t attached little cameras to people to check if they are lying. It is a bit more than “do you like soccer? yes, I love it, sqeee” though.
Of course, but the thing is that a lot of people will say “Yes I love soccer” without actually having much of a clue about the sport. As I said, while I believe a lot of women would say they are sports fans, I think very few of them would, say, regularly watch sports events on TV.
I’m a man who’s not much of a sports person himself, but making a study where you ask people “Hey we’d like to prove people don’t fit stereotypes, do you fit a stereotype?” seems to be a fairly haphazard way of going about science.
…Err which was my original concern. I didn’t read that post through nearly well.
So, after that fascinating gender discussion, let’s just recap the things we know:
- Som men and some women like sports
- There are some differences between men and women
- Comments are easily misinterpreted
- Trolling works
- Civil discourse is dead
- Correcting strangers on the internet is a waste of time (http://xkcd.com/386/)
- Chartannians are assholes
thanx for the recap there torg
tl;dr
;)
Mmm… popcorn
