Pssh. She’s at least as responsible for the state of affairs as he. As far as I can see, this Letanos just has too much outwardly directed pride to function in a long-term conversation with Takako, who is clearly not an expert at watching her words.
I don’t know how she’s responsible for the current states of affairs. She’s been polite and given him credit for his work, emphasising things that he’s done that she thinks are impressive. He’s been a defensive prick.
As far as I can tell, the only way she’s responsible is because she’s successful in the same field, potentially more successful, and he knows it.
He could of course, just have been being playful with the earlier comment. Or Takako could well have acted towards him in such a way previously to justify such behaviour (what we have seen of her so far suggests she’s pretty horrendously socially disfunctional). Of course, it also seems like Letanos is pretty damn hard to hold a conversation with.
Academics are a weird bunch (doing a PhD lets me see this on a daily basis)
He probably has a good reason to be frustrated. The academic system is very unfair in the way it chooses success, and it sounds like he has the better product and they both know it, but isn’t getting the official credit. Its not her fault if the journals unfairly favor her, but then she hasn’t exactly stood up and said “hey you might want to look at my rival, his ideas are better, even if he isn’t as far along. “
I find Takako’s hypothesis rational.
Having reviewed her evidence, he is indeed a prick.

isn’t her hand backwards in the last panel?
